The Sri Rudram, found in the Yajur Veda, is one of the most revered hymns of the Vedic tradition. It praises Rudra (later identified as Shiva), the cosmic force of transformation who removes ignorance and blesses seekers with peace and protection.
Rudram 11 is the chanting of the hymn eleven times, an act of great spiritual potency.
It is believed to purify the environment, dissolve inner obstacles, and generate healing vibrations for all beings.
The collective energy of the chant does not remain confined to the temple — it radiates outward, touching the entire community.
"On arrival we received a warm welcome from the monks of the Buddhist temple (JMC). It was astounding to witness that such a remarkable organisation exists amidst the rush of the urban life. We commenced with a meditation session which brought about a deep sense of peace and stillness, cleansed the mind and body, enhanced concentration, and cultivated a sense of universal love and connection."
A Meeting Point of Vedas and Buddhism
"The beautiful teachings expounded by the wonderful monk, highlighted that the five human values and The Five Precepts of Buddhism are both guiding principles for ethical living. Emphasis was placed on imparting human values to the little ones attending the event as they could become positive influences in their families, communities, and the world at large. Buddhas teachings that suffering arises from attachment and desire was playfully highlighted as well.
With that sense of unity and connection, the tone was set for the follow-on collective Rudram 11 chanting. The JMC is truly a hidden gem. It was a remarkable day of events."
The Rudram 11 at the Buddhist Temple in Gauteng was more than an event; it was a celebration of unity. It reminded us that spirituality is not about division, but about remembering our common essence — compassion, wisdom, and truth.
As the vibrations of the chants lingered in the air, it felt as though both the Vedic rishis and the Buddha were smiling — reminding us that though paths may differ, the destination is the same: awakening, peace, and love for all beings.
We are all looking forward to the next Rudram11 on 30 August 2025
